So I found this on my facebook news feed today and was utterly disgusted. I’ve seen this photo before, only the original with the beautiful young woman and not all of the other sickening crap added onto it. I remember being so proud of this girl for doing what I cannot, for living with her body and smiling and not letting her self harm (at least I am convinced it is from self but..). -I digress- When I found this, I went to the source http://www.facebook.com/pages/Emo-Swag-Princess/223129264478461?ref=ts&fref=ts and reported it. Facebook send me a notice a few hours later saying that the photo was not being removed. They said that there was nothing wrong with it. I was horrified and so upset that they let this go on that I filled out a few feedback pages and on the very last page I wrote a very agitated, very disgusted letter.
"If this kind of content is permitted on this site, though clearly hateful and degrading, what is considered "too inappropriate" for Facebook? This photo only has one intent, which is to degrade and ostrisize a large "community" of your users and otherwise members of the general population. I find this to be unacceptable, that you are allowing a page to post a picture this offensive, and when it is causing a rift in the Facebook community, and even reported, you still do nothing but sit idly by while there are users disgusted and deeply offended by not only this photo and the comments accompanying it, but the page itself. This page is a direct violation of multiple of the supposed "community standards", such as the self harm, bullying/ harassment and hate speech (which is what I personally reported this photo for). The photo is question is of a beautiful young woman standing in a modest bathing suit, covered in scars and cuts in the various stages of healing, and the text at the bottom reads "Fact: boat propellers are a leading cause of injury for whales and other marine life". It ostracizes those suffering from self harming tendencies, and shames those attempting to overcome their condition. I see this photo as a personal attack on not only the young woman depicted in the photograph, but all others in similar circumstances. This goes against your bullying/ harassment section of standards. Self harming behavior is considered by many to be a mental condition, which stems down to being a medical condition. This is a prime example of a group of individuals attacking another based on a medical condition, by means of a photograph. You yourselves state that "While we encourage you to challenge ideas, institutions, events, and practices, we do not permit individuals or groups to attack others based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition" but it seems to me that by allowing this behavior to continue even after it is brought to your attention, you are in fact encouraging this negative behavior on your site. Additionally, the including of the WDCS logo on this photograph is yet another reason that this should be removed; it borders on legal defamation and the misuse of intellectual property, alas, another community standard being infringed. I highly urge you into action on behalf on this photograph, and others of the sort.Sincerely,Kayla Bright.”
I am terrified that the beautiful, ridiculously strong girl in this pic is going to find this and it may be the thing that keeps her from going out again; needless to say I will feel so guilty for putting this here, but I felt like it needed to have attention brought to it. I REFUSE to allow this to mocking continue. I wish I was in high hopes that Facebook would do anything to prevent this type of humiliation to continue, but from what I’ve seen, they won’t. So I leave with a heavy heart and shaking hands. Guys, we need to do something about this. I’m not ordering a tumblr uprising, but just some support for removing all images and slander like this from our world. Thanks…
